Slow Data in Paris
This page contains photos we (Charles Perin, Pierre Dragicevic and Jean-Daniel Fekete) took in 2014 while visiting different collections of manually-crafted maps and visualizations in the Paris area. We scouted various archives as a preparation for an exhibition on Jacques Bertin we organized for the VIS 2014 conference in Paris.

March 2014 - Bertin at Archives Nationales (1/3)
These photos were taken during our first visit of the Jacques Bertin collection at the Archives Nationales. Many of them show hand-drawn charts made not by Bertin, but by the cartographers and students working in his lab. The collection was huge and this shows only a tiny, mostly random sample.

April 2014 - Minard at École des Ponts et Chaussées
These photos were taken during our visit of the map collection of the École nationale des ponts et chaussées, which contains some maps from Charles Joseph Minard. Most of our photos are photos of a computer screen, but the end of the album has photos of original maps and infographics, including Minard's Napoléon March.

May 2014 - Bertin at Bibliothèque Nationale de France
These photos were taken during our visit of the Jacques Bertin collection at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The collection contains several maps hand-painted by Bertin.

May 2014 - Bertin at Archives Nationales (2/3)
We visited a Jacques Bertin collection in a different area of Archives Nationales, which had several of his physical matrices in store, as well as a pre-print annotated version of the Sémiologie Graphique. We only have a handful of pictures for now.

November 2014 - Bertin exhibition at the VIS 2014 Conference
We decided to focus our exhibition on material kindly provided by the Archives Nationales for practical reasons. A major focus was on Bertin's physical matrices, because they are mysterious to many.
