Multiple Queries
Multiple queries are performed by doing lasso selections directly on the visualization. All the queries made are visible on the plot matrix as well. We can do query sculpting by refining any of the selections through boolean unions and intersections. The boolean operators are defined by keyboard modifiers that are similar to those used in drawing programs like Photoshop and Gimp.
Navigate
Browse the dimensions : Matrix and Control Menu
To navigate through the different dimensions, one can click directly on a cell in the plot matrix to animate to the new plot.
A control menu can also be invoked by right clicking within the plot and allows for changing either the x-axis (right menu items) or the y-axis (bottom menu items).
Dragging past a menu item pop-ups a control slider that allows precise control of the 3D transition.
Releasing the mouse button on a menu item triggers the animation.

Excentric label lens
The excentric label lens allows for details on demand: it both plays the role of a filter, and makes the remaining nodes' label visible. It can be resized using the +/- keys.
3-state buttons On the right side, a toolbar contains a set of 3-states buttons. They can be clicked to be turned on and off. And by hovering over them, we can see a preview of inverse state with a smooth animated transition.
Jitter Overlapping nodes are placed around a circle, centered on their original location, with a radius proportional to the number of overlapping nodes. Using this jitter mechanism, one can identify at a glance dense data regions. Moreover, the connections between these overlapping nodes are visible as the circular layout provides space to draw the interconnection links.
Zoom
One of the 3-states buttons allows for zooming on the current selection. When refining the selection, an animated transition takes place as the zoom adjusts to the selection.
Selection History
Each time a new selection is performed, the new selection state is stored in the selection history. Each thumbnail is a three-state button. While hovering over a thumbnail, the selections in that history state are shown transiently on the main plot. Clicking on a thumbnail permanently installs the selections on the current attribute plot. Clicking again on that thumbnail "rolls the dice" to its associated stored plot view.
This example shows the Infovis conference co-authorship network. To focus on different communities, one can:
- Select each community of interest after cleaning up the selection (so that the zoom focuses on the actual selection only)
- To easily compare and navigate between the different communities, use the selection history previews so that the plot view "travels" to the corresponding selection.
